An electron hops between sites of a 2D square lattice with a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Solve for allowed energies vs. magnetic flux per unit cell α = p/q. The energy spectrum is fractal — a self-similar butterfly pattern Douglas Hofstadter discovered in 1976. The dark wings correspond to the integer quantum Hall conductances σ_xy = n·e²/h that won the 1985 Nobel.
a fractal in a real lattice
The Harper equation: an electron on a 2D square lattice with magnetic flux α per unit cell satisfies
ψ(n+1) + ψ(n−1) + 2·cos(2πα·n − k_y)·ψ(n) = E·ψ(n)
For rational α = p/q, the spectrum splits into q bands separated by gaps. For irrational α, the spectrum is a Cantor set — measure zero, totally disconnected. The diagram of E vs α as α sweeps through all rationals is the Hofstadter butterfly.
Hofstadter's self-similarity: zoom into any region and you find a smaller copy of the whole butterfly. The pattern has a beautiful nested structure — the gaps (white regions) are indexed by integers via the Středa formula: each gap corresponds to a particular Chern number, the topological invariant that quantizes the Hall conductance.
Experimental confirmation: in 2013, three independent groups (Cornell, Columbia, Manchester) observed the butterfly in twisted bilayer graphene and graphene-on-hBN. Real electrons in real materials traced out Hofstadter's 1976 theoretical pattern. The butterfly is a real thing made of real electrons.
Connections to other deep math:
• Topological insulators: each gap has a Chern number c determined by the Diophantine equation r = cp + sq.
• Aubry-André model: the 1D limit, which has a localization-delocalization transition exactly mirroring the metal-insulator transition in real disordered systems.
• Continued fractions: the butterfly's structure at α and at p/q ≈ α is controlled by the continued-fraction expansion of α.
Why this is "real" frontier math: the spectrum is provably Cantor for irrational α (Avila-Jitomirskaya 2009, the "Ten Martini Problem," for which Avila won a Fields Medal in 2014). The full self-similar structure has open conjectures about its Hausdorff dimension that are still being resolved.
